The need

Yad Yisroel has been running a soup kitchen in Pinsk for close to ten years. Life has never been easy for the elderly and impoverished Jews of Belarus and we have worked continually over the years to help improve the lives of our fellow Jews.

The recent economic crisis however has had a severe reaction for these underprivileged families. Belarus has seen inflation in real prices of over 140% and the local currency has devalued against the dollar by over 400%. The resultant socio-economic crisis has caused thousands of elderly homes and homes with children who were reliant on the government pensions and credits, to no longer be able to afford basic food staples and supplies.

Due to the rapid inflation many of the shelves in the local supermarkets have been cleared and basic products such as sugar, salt, flour and other food staples are not available. Feeding underprivileged children and supporting the local soup kitchen has become a daily struggle both physically and financially.

Russian and Ukrainian Jewry have been through a lifetime of horrors and sorrow from Nazism to Communism, persecutions and harassments and now an all time increase in the poverty level with no one to turn to. The minimum, which we as compassionate Jews can do for them, is to support them and help them in their constant struggle to survive.

We are serving hundreds of meals daily. For the vast majority, this is the one and only hot meal they receive. Indeed, an act of Hatzolat Nefashot (Saving lives)!
